POLICE WARNS PUBLIC AGAINST FERTILSER TRICKSTERS

Mzuzu Police has warned the public that there is a group of tricksters in the city which is stealing money from people by telling them that they have cheap fertilizer.

Police Public Relations for Mzuzu Police Constable Edward Longwe said they have already arrested two people connected to this racket and hope to break the ring.

The two are said to have stolen over half a million from a farmer over the weekend.

Sixty-year old Isaiah Kaunda of Zebedia Kaunda Village in Traditional Authority Mtwalo’s area in Mzimba and Thirty-year old Moses Mkandawire of Lwafwa Village traditional Authority Kabunduli in Nkhatabay have been arrested and charged with theft by trick.

The two who are part of the gang, are said to have fraudulently obtained money from Mr. Charles Boti whom he told they had 100 bags of fertilizer which they were selling at K6, 000 each.

A bag of fertilizer is currently going at K10, 000 each 50 kilogram bag.

The two therefore got K600, 000 from Mr. Boti last Saturday and were arrested when they failed to produce the bags of fertilizer which they claimed were at Ekwendeni.

The two were arrested when Mr. Boti invited him to his office where the police were also waiting for them.

The police are therefore advising farmers to desist from buying fertilizer from unknown people or outlets who they said should also be reported to the police.

The two who have not yet said where the money is will appear in court soon to answer to charges of theft by trick.
