MZUZU MP RESIGNS FROM RULING DPP

Democratic Progressive Party Member of Parliament for Mzuzu City Mr. Good Kaira has resigned from the party with immediate effect.

In his letter dated December 1, 2008, Mr. Kaira said he has done so after a thorough assessment of the party’s leadership which showed that he was no longer wanted.

The resignation comes at a time when the party has been rocked with confusion due to how it is conducting its primary elections parliamentary contestants.

The resignation of the Mzuzu City Member of Parliament Mr. Good Kaira is a second one in the region after Mzimba Solola Member of parliament Ms. Gertrude Mkandawire also resigned from the party two months ago.

Mr. Kaira who was elected as a Republican Party parliamentarian before ditching the party to join DPP says the party has been using party machinery to fight him so that he should not continue representing the constituency.

He said it was clear that at the time state President Bingu wa Mutharika who is also the party’s leader conducted a number of engagements in the region he vigorously campaigned for a man he contested against in the party’s primary elections and lost Prof. Peter Mwanza.

"During the primaries the party used government resources to support Pro. Mwanza like hosting those people that voted for him and Mzuzu Government Secondary school on the eve of the elections," he said.

Mr. Kaira said he only got 10 votes out of 700 voters which is an indication that he is not wanted in the party.

The Party’s secretary general, whom the letter is addressed to, Mr. Henry Chimunthu Banda said he is yet to receive the letter since he was not in Lilongwe at the time ZBS contacted him and therefore he was not in a better position to make any comment.
